Modern Transport Engineers is a leading manufacturer of heavy haulage trailers, known for pushing the boundaries of transport engineering through innovation, reliability, and smart design. As part of our continued growth, we are looking for a Hydraulic Systems Developer / Designer to join our Research & Development team.

This is a hands-on role at the cutting edge of transport technology, working across both workshop and real-world environments to develop advanced hydraulic and mechatronic systems.

About the Role:

You will be responsible for the design, development, and optimisation of hydraulic systems used across our heavy haulage trailer range. Working closely with our R&D team, you’ll help bring new concepts to life — from initial design through to testing and real-world implementation.

This role offers a unique mix of in-house engineering and field-based testing, giving you direct exposure to how your designs perform in demanding conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop hydraulic systems for heavy transport applications
  • Integrate hydraulic solutions with mechatronic and electronic control systems
  • Create detailed design documentation, schematics, and specifications
  • Prototype, test, and refine systems both in-house and out in the field
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hydraulic and control system issues
  • Work closely with fabrication, electrical, and production teams
  • Contribute to innovation within the R&D team and continuous product improvement

About You:

  • Experience in hydraulic system design and development
  • Understanding of mechatronics and integration with electronic control systems
  • Practical, hands-on approach with the ability to work both in workshop and field environments
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • CAD experience
  • Background in heavy transport, machinery, or similar industries (highly regarded)
  • Ability to think outside the box and contribute to innovative solutions

Why Join MTE?

  • Be part of a forward-thinking R&D team developing industry-leading equipment
  • Work on cutting-edge heavy haulage technology
  • Diverse role with a mix of office, workshop, and field work
  • Opportunity to see your designs operate in real-world conditions
