A complete truck and trailer combination for Sims Metal NZ, bringing together an MTE-built 4 Axle Hardox Semi Tipper with a SITRAK C9 6x4 Tractor Unit.

Designed for demanding bulk metal transport operations, the combination pairs the C9’s 660HP driveline and 90-tonne GCM with a purpose-built 45-tonne MTE semi tipper incorporating a 13-metre Hardox body, rear steer axle, onboard weighing and an extensive package of operational and safety equipment.

MTE 4 Axle Hardox Semi Tipper

The trailer was designed and manufactured by MTE specifically around Sims Metal’s operations, with a large 13,000mm-long Hardox body providing the durability required for transporting scrap metal loads.

The body features an 8mm Hardox floor, 6mm Hardox lower sides, 4mm upper sides, and 4mm Hardox headboard and tailgate. A hydraulically operated top-hinged tailgate completes the body arrangement.

Built Around Productivity & Safety

A major focus of this build was incorporating systems that improve both day-to-day productivity and operator safety.

Key equipment includes:

  • 13m Hardox body with 8mm Hardox floor
  • Rear steer axle
  • Sidewinder hydraulic cover
  • SILodec onboard weighing system
  • Overhead power line detector
  • Knorr-Bremse rollover protection
  • Reverse camera and premium safety systems throughout

The rear steer axle assists manoeuvrability with the 13-metre body, particularly when accessing tighter industrial sites.

The trailer's hydraulic system also incorporates safety interlocks. The door is sequenced to open before the body lifts and the body must lower before the door closes, while the hydraulics only function when the body lock and door trips are unlocked.

SITRAK C9 6x4 Tractor Unit

Up front is a SITRAK C9 6x4 Tractor Unit, providing the power for the combination with a 15.3-litre WP15H Euro 6 engine producing 660HP and up to 3,200Nm of torque, paired with a 12-speed ZF AMT transmission.

The C9 is rated to a 90,000kg GCM and features rear air suspension, diff and cross locks, a ZF retarder and EBS braking, making it well suited to heavy truck and trailer applications.

Safety Across the Combination

The safety package extends beyond the trailer and into the C9 tractor unit.

The C9 incorporates Electronic Stability Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Advanced Emergency Braking, Hill Start Assist and a 360-degree Around View Monitor, complementing the trailer's rollover protection, power line detection and reversing systems.

Together, these systems create a truck and trailer combination where safety has been considered across the complete unit rather than as individual components.

Customer: Sims Metal NZ

The combination was finished off with custom signwriting by The Sign Formula, Hamilton, tying the truck and trailer together for a sharp, professional finished package.
